Alton Harry Garard was the son of John D. Garard and Sarah Ellen (Furnish). Alton had three known siblings:

Alton grew up in Adair County, Missouri. He married Daisy Arminta Goodwin on 14 Dec 1903in Kirksville, Missouri and by 1910 they were living in Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri where Alton was the propriator of a billiard hall. Alton and Daisy had two known children:

Hila M. Garard 1907-

By 1918, the Garard family had moved to Park County, Wyoming where Alton was a farmer. In 1920 they lived in Big Horn County, Wyoming, and in 1930 in Sheridan County, Wyoming.
