Mariel M. RichardMariel M. Richard, 89, of Medford, Oregon, passed away at her home on April 4, 2010. She was surrounded by her loving husband, Frank Richard, and three of her daughters.Mariel was born September 22, 1920, in Cresbard, S.D., to Dr. R.G. Mayer and Olive Mayer. She grew up in Aberdeen, S.D., and received her b.a. degree from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion in 1941, where she was active in the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She attended the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Nebraska and then worked as a caseworker for Family Services in Minneapolis, Minn. She married Burdette F. (Wally) Wallace from Lincoln, Nebr., on August 28, 1943. After a period of service in the Navy, they settled in Aberdeen where Dr. Wallace practiced dentistry. Together they raised six children. In 1984 they retired and moved to Medford, Ore. Dr. Wallace died in 1996. In Aberdeen, Mariel worked for Lutheran Social Services and also taught at Presentation Junior College, where she developed and taught the social work program. She was active in several community organizations including Girl Scouts, Job's Daughters, Jaycettes, Northwestern Mental Health Center, New Beginnings Group Home, First Presbyterian Church and PEO Sisterhood. On July 26, 1997, Mariel married Frank H. Richard, owner of a title insurance company in Medford. They shared over 12 wonderful years together. Mrs. Richard was active in CASA, Chapter BE of PEO, AAUW and was an ordained elder and deacon in the Westminster Presbyterian Church. In the 1980s, Mariel also worked in the surgical office of her brother, Dr. Roland M. Mayer. Mariel loved visiting with family and friends, playing bridge, knitting and reading.In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Patricia (Robert, deceased) Glasrud, of Omaha, Nebr.; Barbara (Allen) Blaszak, of Ashland, Ore.; Mary Wallace, of Medford; Wendy Wiedenman, of Gold Hill, Ore.; Ronald (Kathy) Wallace, of Breckenridge, Colo.; and Scott (Tina) Wallace, of Stanchfield, Minn.; Frank's children, Jay (Sandie) Richard, of Portland, Ore.; Cathy (Tim) Gerking, of Medford; and Mary (Mike) Herold, of Halfway, Ore.; and a brother, Dr. R.M. Mayer, of Medford. In addition to all her children, Mariel took great delight in her 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and her numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. R.G. Mayer; her first husband, Burdette Wallace; and her brother, Robert Mayer.Her family wishes to thank the numerous friends who kept the family supported with wonderful meals, loving visits and beautiful cards, phone calls and flowers. A special thank you to Asante Hospice and Scott Simmons for providing Mariel the medical care she needed.A memorial service will be held at Westminister Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2010, with a reception following the service. All are welcome.
