Life-long Walla Walla area resident, Adelle Ganguet passed away on November 13, 2013 of natural causes. She was 91. Adelle and her late husband Morris spent their entire lives sheep ranching, wheat farming, and raising their two daughters. In the process, they enriched the Walla Walla community with their time and efforts.
Adelle was born to Glenn and Lola Conover in their Spring Valley farmhouse on October 8, 1922. She attended a one-room school house through 8th grade and then finished her high school education at Waitsburg High, graduating at the age of 16 in 1939. Along the way, she pursued her growing love of music – playing the piano and organ at the Waitsburg Christian Church for ten years, as well as playing the cello for five years for Waitsburg High. She continued her musical education at WSU.
On September 19th, 1941, she married Morris Ganguet. They began their life together as sheep ranchers, working in the Dixie area, as well as in Slater, near Eureka. Adelle loved to tell stories about the rustic conditions on the sheep ranch, and as a young bride, cooking for the sheep herders.
After 6 years of sheep ranching, she and her husband turned to wheat farming near Dixie. By 1949, they had two daughters, Jacque and Jeannie. Over the next several years, Adelle still enjoyed her music and there was always a piano in her home. Lucky friends and relatives would hear her play her favorites – songs like Stardust, Misty and Autumn Leaves. When harvest came, Adelle and her girls worked the kitchen all day long, feeding the hungry harvest crews. She later talked about how hard it was, but also how much she loved it.
Adelle and her husband moved into Walla Walla in 1977. There, they built a home on the Walla Walla Country Club golf course that enjoyed a spectacular view of the course and where she loved keeping a beautiful home and entertaining. She especially enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Many golf outings ended with Adelle fixing everyone a delicious home cooked meal. She also loved to dance and her favorite dance partner was her husband, Morris. They retired from active farming in the early 80s.
Adelle was a tireless volunteer, helping out as a 4-H leader in Dixie, and volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital and the Fort Walla Walla Museum. She was a charter member of the DeNova Club in Waitsburg. She belonged to the Dixie Belles and the PEO CN Chapter in Walla Walla. Adelle was a member of the Waitsburg Christian Church.
Adelle always maintained a positive attitude and concern for others. She loved spending long visits with her daughters, her granddaughter and most recently holding and feeding her great grandson, Cooper. Her passing leaves a deep void in all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris, in 1999. She is survived by her sister, Claire Raven; daughters, Jacque (Bob) Brock and Jeannie (Douglas) Hurd; granddaughter, Allyson (Jesse) Dragoo and one great grandchild, Cooper. The family would especially like to thank Adelle’s caregiver, Jodie Carlson, who quickly became one of the family and was with Adelle as she passed.
A private family graveside service is scheduled for Waitsburg City Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Walla Walla Country Club from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice, Ft. Walla Walla Museum or to the Morris and Adelle Ganguet Nursing Scholarship Fund through Herring Groesclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA.
