Dear Dan,
There has been some question about the parentage of my g-gf James Ludwell Beck. With the help of the CARTER family of Indianapolis, I have found the key to our mystery. The Carters had James Ludwell (no surname) matching my birthdate for James Ludwell Beck in their Carter family bible. Yeah! Below is what I now know about my James L. Beck.
James Wadsworth Beck b.8/31/1831 Owen Co IN, is the youngest son of James Beck & Margaret Cannady. My g-gf, James Ludwell Beck b.4/01/1851 is the only child of James W. My paternal gmother, Gladys Marie Beck Dodson is the dau of James L.
It is repeated in BECK genealogy that James Wadsworth Beck was md. only once, to Frances Fancher and that they had no children. This is true. However, it does not mention that James W. had an illigitmate son before marrying Frances, this is my g- gf. James L. Beck was raised by both his mother & stepfather in Tuscola, Douglas Co. IL & his father & stepmother in Milan, Sullivan Co.MO. Unfortunately, my g-gf, James L. was not even mentioned in the obituary of James W. Beck.
The mother of James L. is Nancy Jane "Jennie" (maybe Pittman) Carter Pittman b.8/25/1829 in KY. She is living with the James Beck family in the Aug.1850 Owen Co census, probably working there as a maid. Nancy Jane "Jennie" Carter md.1834 Owen Co IN to William S. Pittman. The couple had 4 children and lived near Tuscola, Douglas Co Illinois most of their married life. Nancy Jane died 8/14/1896 and is buried near Tuscola in Broadus Cemt. James Ludwell Beck d.1916 in Stevenson, Skamania Co. WA, and is buried in the 100F Cemt. in The Dalles, Wasco Co. OR. The James L. Beck family migrated from MO and homesteaded in Condon, Gilliam Co. OR about 1905.
