Nancy Gerking was the second daughter and fourth child of John and Rachael (Rice) Gerking. She was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky on 11 May 1796 according to the John Gerking Bible record. Shortly after her eighteenth birthday, she was married to Henry Martin. The event occurred on 29 September 1814, Jefferson County, Kentucky by the Rev. James Vance, a Presbyterian minister.
This line has not been traced therefore the outcome of the Martin family is unknown. Also there are no Martin records to be found in connection with the Gerking family other than in the 1820 U. S. Census of Washington County, Indiana. There was a Nancy Martin listed with four small children under the age of 10 years living near our ancestress, Rachael Gerking. There were only three or four homes between the two families which would indicate a possible relationship. It is possible that this was our Nancy, recently widowed, and she probably remarried shortly thereafter and with another surname making it very difficult to trace. There is no record in Washington County.
On 6 March 1820 a John and Nancy Martin filed a bill of appraisement of an estate but in securing the document it did not say whose estate or contain anything else in the way of identification. It is possible that Henry's full name was John Henry Martin and that he died shortly thereafter. This is, however, pure speculation.
The late William S. Junkin came up with names for the children of Henry and Nancy (Gerking) Martin but did not document how he had obtained them.
