Chester Lloyd "Chet" Slager, 94, of Crookston, Minnesota, died Thursday afternoon, April 15, 2004, at the Riverview Nursing Home in Crookston.

Chet was born in Slager, Saskatchewan, Canada on September 16, 1909, the son of Jake and Junia (VonWold) Slager. He moved with his family to Tolley, North Dakota as a young child and then to Grygla, Minnesota, where his mother homesteaded. On October 5, 1934 he was united in marriage to Blanch Valley in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Crookston. Chet was employed on the Perry farm, near Crookston, until 1949 when he began working at the Red River Alfalfa plant in Crookston. He later went to work driving a truck for the E.W. Wiley Company until his retirement. Blanch died on December 22, 1973. A year later Chet moved to Beltrami, Minnesota. After being united in marriage to Ruth Mandrell in Washington, Iowa, Chet and Ruth made their home there. Ruth passed away in 1991. In 1995 Chet returned to Crookston and lived in the Oak Court Apartments. He liked being involved in the many activities of Oak Court, as well as, going for walks and skiing. He also enjoyed putting bicycles together from junked parts and giving them to children and the Sisters of the local convents. Chet did a lot of volunteering at the Golden Link Senior Citizens Center and was recognized on numerous occasions for his contributions to the Center. He was a longtime member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and looked forward to attending Mass every Sunday. Chet will be very deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.

Family members include three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerome and Connie Slager of Hawley, MN, Harold and Audrey Slager of Beltrami, MN, and Bruce and Lisa Slager of Kesota, MN; two daughters and a son-in-law, Colleen Filipy of Grand Forks, ND, and Shirley and Gary Matthews of Bedford, IN; sixteen grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Besides his wives, Blanch and Ruth, Chet was preceded in death by an infant son, Phillip, who died in 1935; a grandson, Troy Matthews; his parents; a brother, Henry; and two sisters, Mildred Owens and Ethel Nielsen.

The funeral service for Chester Lloyd Slager will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, April 20, 2004, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Monday from 5-7PM, with a 7PM prayer service, and also at the church for an hour before the funeral. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Crookston.
