Notes for Russell Andrew (Russ) Hazelwood

Russell A. Hazelwood, age 90 of Painesville, Ohio, died Saturday afternoon, May 31, 2008, after a brief illness. He was born in Oakvale, Mercer County, West Virginia, on October 13, 1917, to the late L. Andrew Hazelwood and Rhoda (Biggs) Hazelwood. Raised in Shelby, Ohio, he was a 1935 graduate of Shelby High School. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WWII, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to his Honorable Discharge in 1945. On December 27, 1945, he married his beloved wife, Ruth (Wechter), who survives him. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion. He was an owner of Truckway Services, Inc., a trucking company specializing in the transport of bulk salt, prior to his retirement in 1983. Over the course of his full life he was an accomplished fast-pitch softball player, a motorcycle enthusiast and a private pilot. He and Ruth spent more than 20 years enjoying their winters in Florida where they made many friends. In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by his youngest brother, John (Margaret), of Norwalk. In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years, he is survived his sister V. Ruth (Russell) Barbour, of Shelby, and brother L. Lee (Catherine) of Stayton, Oregon. He is also survived by his children Michael Hazelwood of Cleveland Heights, Vicki Hazelwood Fields and Daniel Hazelwood, both of Painesville; grandchildren Heather (Gerry) Porter of Los Angeles, Rachel Hazelwood, Holly Hazelwood and Sarah Hazelwood, all of Cleveland Heights, and Megan (Travis) Miller, of Ravenna. He is also survived by daughters-in-law Kelly (Spencer) Carress and Candice Curschman Hazelwood, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A remembrance will be held Friday, June 6, 2008, at the Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio, for family and friends. To honor his life and in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to Hospice of the Western Reserve.
