Notes for Claretta (Toby) Marie Tobin

YAKIMA - Claretta Marie "Toby" Shannon came into this world on February 10, 1936. Always known as Toby, she was born in Mabton, Washington to Theresa and Leonard Tobin.
Typical of her Irish heritage and humor, she left us to follow the leprechauns on March 17, 2005. Toby completed her early education in various catholic boarding schools throughout the northwest, graduating from St Joseph Academy in Sprague, Washington in 1954. She was president of her graduating class of three students. She continued her education at St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1957.
On February 15, 1958 she married Richard Shannon in Grandview, Washington. In the early years of her marriage she lived and worked in San Diego, California. After moving back to the Yakima Valley in 1963 she lived in Terrace Heights until her death. She worked at St Elizabeth's Hospital for 30 years, many of these as an ER nurse. Her handmade quilts, blankets, and nightshirts, distributed throughout the state, will keep people warm so they can remember her love. Full of a quick wit and humor, she was always ready with a quip and a smile.
People who will continue to follow her traditions are: her husband, Richard Shannon of Yakima; her children, and their spouses: Randy and Kathy Shannon of Damascus, Oregon, Trina and Keith Dale of Hoquiam, Rory and Barbara Shannon of Puyallup, Ryan and Marnie Shannon of Yakima, and Lisel Campbell of Blaine; her grandchildren: William, Miles, Kipp, Kris, Ceili, Gage, Jerad, Eric, Garrett, Keon, Gavin, Ciera, and Sarah; her siblings: Jeanette and Bill Castle, Betty and Dean Doerschlag, Jim and Beth Tobin, Toots and Jerry Roy, Don and Theresa Tobin, David and Carmen Tobin, John Colby, Ilene and Ray Bouchey, Freda and Ted Stegeman, Marge Shannon, Neva and Ben Robillard, and Linda Lyons. Coming from a large family, she had a wide definition of family. She will be missed by many more than we can list here.
In accordance with Toby's Catholic Faith, the arrangements will be as follows. The Vigil/Rosary will be held at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, Washington at 7 pm on Monday, March 21. A Mass of Remembrance will be held at St Joseph's Church, Yakima, Washington at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday March 22, 2005. There will be a luncheon following the service. For those who wish to attend, inurnment of the ashes will be held at the Mabton Cemetery following the luncheon.
