Kathleen Edith Holmes
Kathleen Edith Holmes died July 26, 2001, at St. John's Retirement Village in Woodland. Born on July 18, 1914, to Guy and Minnie Gerking of Spokane, Wash., she was 87.
She was a graduate of Cheny Normal College in Spokane and taught school in Dixie, Wash. When World War II started, she took over the music department at radio station KFPY in Spokane. She was active as a cellist and known throughout the area, and was the first-chair cellist in the Spokane Symphony.
She met her future husband Carl at the USO when he was a sailor stationed at Farragut, Idaho. After they married and moved to Winters, she continued playing cello in the Sacramento Symphony. While raising her family, she also played in string quartets and accompanied local vocalists for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Carl; her daughter, Barbara Holmes; her son, Carl Holmes Jr.; and granddaughters Andrea Morton and Margaret Holmes.
Cremation is under the direction of the Nautilus Society. Friends are welcome at a memorial service Saturday, Aug. 11., at 11 a.m. at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Winters.
The family asks that memorials be sent to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617; St. John's Retirement Village, 135 Woodland Ave., Woodland, CA 95695; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
