There is an indication that John Gerking and William Lux, Jr served together for William Lux, Sr who was the son of Da rby Lux, both Darby and William, Sr., Captains of a vesse l that regularly sailed between the colonies and Rotterdam. "Know all men these presents that we John Gerking and William Lux are held offically bound unto Beverly Randolf, Esq . Governor of Virginia in the sum of fifty pounds currency to which payment to be made to the said Governor this.... .?....we shall officially bind ourselves, our heirs and firmly by these presents. "Whereas this is a marriage intended to b e had solemnized between the above bound John Gerking and Rachel Rice daughter of William Rice of Jefferson County. Lousiville (then a part of Virginia) was founded in 1780. Karl Gerking, a researcher in Germany, found that John Gerk ing was a tax payer in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1800 , 1810, 1811, 1812 and 1823 and was a witness to the will of one James Askow in 1805. Further, he states that John and Rachel Gerking (Girkin) were members of the Sinking Spring Primitive Baptist Church in Washington County, Indiana . According to entries in the chuch book of this church, Rachel was a widow in 1818. 1. Year and place of death are questionable. Orange County , Indiana was founded in 1816; Washington County, Indiana w as founded 1814. The year of death may have been 1818. Se e Johnson's genealogy of Gerking family. 2. The surname o f his descendants is spelled Gerkin, Gerkine, Gerking an d Girkin in various censuses from 1830 through 1860 3. A bi ble held by Margaretha, John's daughter, listed his birth p lace as Baden, Germany. There is a John Girkin in the 179 0 census of Tyrell County, North Carolina.
