Notes for Eli J Lewis


He was known as a hustler in business and politics at Arkansas
Post. He was a partner in the large merchandise estalishment of Lewis &
Thomas on Front Street. They advertised frequently in the Arkansas
Gazette until it moved to Little Rock in 1821. Their wares included: Dry
Goods, Groceried, Hardware, Queenware, Books, Stationery and Whiskey and
Brandy. Lewis was clerk of the Circuit Court and made the first
Postmaster of Arkansas Post in 1819. In 1828 he was made County Clerk.
His child, Maria Lewis, was probably by Sarah Stillwell but the date of
birth is not known. Sarah died January 4, 1820.
